The next Samsung Galaxy flagship, the Galaxy S9, is not expected to arrive anytime before January next year. However, that has not stopped the rumor of speculating on the expected features of the device. A couple of reports earlier this year suggested that the Galaxy S9 will boast a dual-camera configuration on the back, as does the Galaxy Note8 (first impressions). Now a new report from the Korean publication ETNews has spilled some beans regarding the characteristics of the camera of the next flagship
According to the report, the Samsung Galaxy S9 can display a sensor at 1,000 frames per second. The company is currently working on a three-layer image sensor, which with a DRAM chip, will be able to capture videos at a whopping 1000fps. Thanks to this sensor, the Galaxy S9 could be the first smartphone in the world that boasts of this technology. Like the moment, Sony's Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact are the only smartphones that offer support for slow-motion video recording from 960fps to 720p.
The ETNews report suggests that Samsung will begin mass-producing a three-layer image sensor on November 17. This structured three-layer sensor design will be developed by connecting a system semiconductor that will be in charge of the calculations and a DRAM chip that supports the temporary storage of data through Silicon Via (TSV) technology. After the pilot operation, the company will begin mass production in December.
It is expected that the camera sensor of the Samsung Galaxy S9 is better than the one we currently have in the Galaxy Note8. To recap, the new note flaunts two 12-megapixel handles on the back. It is the world's first smartphone that offers optical image stabilization for rear camera sensors.
The report also mentions that the camera sensor based on TSV technology can dramatically increase the performance of a device, but it also increases the overall manufacturing cost. If during production, any of the three layers stacked on the sensor are defective, the entire sensor has to be thrown away. This is likely to increase the base price of the Samsung Galaxy S9 lineup.
