3GPP has officially announced that '5G' would become the official name of the next generation of mobile connectivity technologies that would be successful in today's 4G technologies like LTE or LTE-Advanced.
3GPP has also released the official logo for the new technology standard. The new logo wave pattern basically translates to the existing 4G logo while the green LTE-A logo waves are now a part of the new 5G logo.
The use of the 5G logo on the cover sheets of the 3GPP specification is designed to help the industry identify when the 5G features will appear. It will be used in the relevant specifications of Phase 1 of 5G in Version 15 (Completed in late 2018) and then in the Phase 2, Release 16 5G specifications - for completion in 2020.
