Motorola has started rolling out Android Lollipop 5.0 update for the unlocked version Moto G (Gen 2), announcing it in a global support page. With the announcement, the smartphone becomes the first device to receive the update, and, in fact, is ahead of Google's own Nexus 4 Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013), and Nexus 10 devices.
The company owned by Lenovo has also posted the changelog for the update. Motorola says users either receive notification of the update to Android 5.0 OTA Lollipop, and users can also manually check for updates by visiting Settings> About Phone updates> System. With either method, users will then select 'Yes, I am', to authorize the download of the update, and then click "Install Now."
Post upgrade, the firmware is updated to version 22.11.6. Motorola announced changes to the Moto G (Gen 2) with the Android 5.0 update to include new material Lollipop design UI with smooth animations to new applications and themes, widgets and color systems as well as new notifications UI now will appear on the lock screen.
Other announced new features of the Android Lollipop 5.0 update for the Moto G (Gen 2) include Smart Lock; interruptions and downtime settings that offer the option to adjust how interrupts again behave; Multitasking redesigned; Ambient display now shows notifications without turning the entire screen; Motorola Assist renewed and includes Lollipop new flashlight option as part of quick adjustments.
Internet connections are smarter and performance improvements through the new Android Runtime (ART) to help optimize application performance are also listed. Notably, Ars Technica reports the update has started rolling out some unlocked devices in the US, and is 386.7MB in size.
The company had last month promised Android Lollipop 5.0 update for the Moto X, Moto X (Gen 2), Moto G, Moto G (Gen 2), Moto G 4G LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini smartphones without giving many details about timing.
Last week, the global launch previously announced Android 5.0 Lollipop to be delayed until November 12 due to some "error pending", which was later speculated to be a Wi-Fi network error battery drain reported in the Nexus 5.
